# Is Culver City the Capital of the AI Media Industry? The AI media industry, if you can call it an industry yet, does not have a home. The money backing the industry largely comes from venture capital firms in Silicon Valley. The labs building the top AI models are in San Francisco and China. In the realm of video models, the labs are increasingly in China. The companies most effectively productizing the models are spread around the world. The artists creating great work with the tools are legitimately spread around the world, but a critical mass of them are located in Los Angeles. This comes as no surprise as Los Angeles is the capital of media and entertainment and has been for over a century. All the major studios are located in Los Angeles and a plurality of the top directors, actors, producers, and talent live in the area. The most ambitious filmmakers have centralized here for decade after decade. Many social media stars also make their home Los Angeles out of habit (some instinct of 'oh LA is where filmmakers should live') and convenience to the complementary parts of the media industry. It appears the same thing is happening with the most talented AI filmmakers too. Now, the word 'AI filmmaker' deserves a long explanation and debate, but for the purposes of this piece let it simply stand for 'creators who are very good at using AI video tools to make excellent work'. Because Los Angeles has the biggest mass of creative talent, much of the AI media industry eagerly circles around the area wanting proximity to that talent. Within Los Angeles, the industry appears to be reaching a consensus that the center of the AI media industry is in Culver City. Several of the largest studios are there: Amazon MG Studios, Sony Pictures Studios, Sony Animation, and Apple TV. It's also home to several large tech companies: Amazon, Amazon Web Services, Apple, and ByteDance. In the last few months several things have happened to mark it as a growing epicenter of AI film & media. # Companies Are Clustering Around Culver City In the last six months, multiple AI companies focused on the film & entertainment industry have been moving to Culver City and opening large offices. This summer alone a cohort of companies representing over $2 billion in venture capital have set up shop in Culver City. The influx of companies includes both labs creating products and studios creating films, shows, and micro-dramas Promise , a venture-backed AI studio, [opened an office](https://www.instagram.com/p/DcJCO0OIuHR/) right across the street from Sony Studios on Motor avenue. Not so far away, Luma Labs opened its creator space the Dream Lab in Culver City. In this space director Jon Finger leads a team of filmmakers and AI artists to do research and development into hybrid AI filmmaking. Over on the Hayden tract, an industrial area of Culver City with tons of small studios and production companies, Sean Parker's AI media venture Cantina Labs is opening a large Los Angeles office that will house a product team and creators. [TrueShort](https://trueshort.com/), a micro-drama studio and mobile streaming app with over $12-million in venture backing from the likes of Jeffrey Katzenberg and Khosla ventures, opened its headquarters in Culver City this September. Nik Kleverov's [Native Foreign](https://nativeforeign.co/), the AI-forward studio that was producing OpenAI's $20 million AI feature Critterz, set up their office only a mile away as well in the Helms design district. This list, in no way exhaustive, includes just some of the companies. Several more companies are in the process of opening offices or actively searching for them. The traditional movie studios are encouraging the movement too. Amazon MGM Studios is one the most forward-thinking studios in Hollywood. Through their new AI studios initiative, they're actively doing deals with AI filmmakers and hiring specialists. It's not unusual that we check up on a filmmaker in the AI space only to learn they're working on the MGM studios lot now. The funding, distribution, and most of all legitimacy that studios like Sony, Amazon and Apple provide is a draw that many AI companies and AI filmmakers seek. It serves to attract and anchor companies to the area. # Why AI Media is Choosing Culver City The stream of AI media talent congregating around Culver City is a clear trend. So it's worth asking, why are so many startups and studios in the AI film/media space coming to Culver City? The area has a big appeal for a few reasons. There's already an impressive hub of movie studios and Big Tech within a very small area in Culver City. Three large movie studios are within blocks of each other: Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Studios, and Apple TV all have huge studio lot footprints in Culver City. The Culver Theater (owned by Amazon) is frequently the site of movie premieres and special events. Big Tech is in Culver City too. Amazon, Amazon Web Services, and Apple have large office buildings attached to their entertainment outfits. ByteDance and TikTok are just a couple miles south. You could take a meeting at every company listed in the same day. Indeed, many filmmakers regularly find themselves in Culver City doing exactly that. This proximity is synergistic for all the companies in the area as it makes more meetings, chance encounters, and deals possible. Culver City is its own city inside Los Angeles and has the official nickname "The Heart of Screenland". The city has a strong tradition of economic development within the realm of entertainment and media. In that vein, the city has been a wonderful partner to us (AI on the Lot) in putting on our annual conference "AI on the Lot" every year. Conversations with city officials, the chamber of commerce, and local businesses are always straightforward: they all want to see a strong economy in Culver City and understand that attracting more business from the media & entertainment industry is a huge component. The City is a supportive partner to businesses setting up in Culver City. City Council members regularly give tours of available office space to interested companies. Culver City is also conveniently located geographically, which is never to be underestimated in Los Angeles. Culver City is about 20-minutes from Santa Monica, 25-minutes from Downtown, and 25-minutes from West Hollywood. It's one of the few places that's convenient whether you live on the West Side, the East Side, or in Central LA. # The Industry's Annual Pilgrimage to Culver City In addition to all the above, AI on the Lot also makes Culver City our venue every May for our annual conference, which is the largest AI media conference in the world. The result is a pilgrimage of thousands of filmmakers, startups, and investors interested in the AI film & media space coming to Culver City for two days to meet each other. The resulting flood of people spawns dozens of satellite events and side activities in Culver City planned independently of the conference. During last year's conference, the Culver City chamber of commerce even offered tours of available office space to recently capitalized startups looking for offices. Young people starting their careers are entering a field where the map is still being drawn, so anyplace where they see industry leaders congregating looks like the place to build a career. Since the 2026 conference, we've received multiple reports of college graduates moving to Culver City upon graduation to pursue work in AI filmmaking. # Keep an Eye on Culver City It's difficult to call any one place the 'center' of an industry. In the case of software, Silicon Valley is clearly the center. And in the case of film & television, Los Angeles has been the industry's center since its beginning. The AI media space is still forming, so it's too early to make any definitive claims. But as the industry develops, don't ignore what's happening in Culver City. AI on the Lot has deliberately decided to plant our annual conference in Culver City. In so far as there can be a physical center of this emerging industry, AI on the Lot is working to make it Culver City. You can join the cluster of frontier media companies in Culver City too.
